This is our top 5 Christmas commercial music of this year.

It's December again and the Christmas holiday is knocking on our door. And right on time, we see advertisements everywhere. Like every year, the biggest brands in the world release their Christmas campaigns and commercials which, somehow, we've all learned to enjoy.

Don't worry, we don't want to talk about ads and commercials here. Well, maybe a little. We rather want to talk about the thing which is rarely talked about - the music of Christmas commercials. So here we reveal our top five Christmas advertisement songs/music of 2021.

Here we go!

5. In fifth place

The department store company of the UK is well known for its creative Christmas commercials. Since 2007 they have been working with the Adam & Eve/DDB agency on their advertising campaigns during the holidays and with quite a success.

For this year's commercial, they've decided to tell a not so very new story - a story about friendship between a boy and an alien. For the music, however, they've chosen something slightly familiar. But here they have managed amazingly to turn something old into something completely new - a cover of the 80s track "Together in Electric Dreams" by Philipp Oakey and Giorgio Moroder. A very typical 80s song with synth, electronic drums and  fast pacing was transformed into a dreamy, slow, romantic song with a beautiful female vocal performed by Lola Young.
It definitely sounds very Christmassy and captures a magical feeling. Even though John Lewis and Partners were accused of stealing and copying the idea we still like the song and chose it for our top five list. But it might have influenced our ranking here as number 5.

4. Coming it at number four is again an ad campaign from a British company - Tesco "Nothing's stopping us".
This funny commercial, where you can even see the vaccination proof of Santa, gets more powerful with the song "Don't stop me now" by Queen. And that's not it, they even used the original recording by the legendary Queen, rather than making it a cover. We don't want to know how much the music rights must have cost them. But one thing is sure: without this song the ad wouldn't be as powerful and effective as it is.

So thumbs up to BBH for this humorous and energetic Christmas commercial and the amazing music choice!

3. For position three we decided to bring in the commercial "Chimney" of Coca Cola.
A very heartwarming and moving story about unity and care featuring an orchestral re-arrangement of the classic Mary Poppins song, "Chim Chim Cher-ee". Could it be more festive?

The ad where Christmas magic comes down the chimney was created by DentsuMB UK, whereas the music was produced by SIREN Music Production and recorded in the famous Abbey Road Studios

In the past Coca Cola has proven brilliant in their use of music. We are pretty sure everyone would agree with us that whenever they listen to "Wonderful Dream" by Melanie Thornton they have this picture of Coca Cola ads with the red truck caravan and Santa Claus in their mind. This song has almost became a sound logo to Coca Cola. Although this cover song used by the brand is ancient and not really from this year - we couldn't leave it unmentioned.

2. Taking second place in our top Christmas commercial song list is McDonalds with their ad "Imaginary Tiggy". Like the commercials mentioned above they made a cover version of a well known song. And this song is not just a well known song but a number one hit song by "Time After Time" by Cyndi Laupert.

We have to say that this was a very brave move. It's quite risky to use such a hit song since everyone has a memory and a feeling tied to it. This applies to all the cover songs mentioned above. But as for this cover song it is very unique. The downsized minimal piano music followed with soft female vocal of the UK pop singer Mabel gives the song a warm touch and a whole new narrative. The listener gets a chance to build new memories, tie new feelings on this cover song. For this creativity of making their own version of "Time after Time", the ad made by Leo Burnett London takes the place two on our top five list.

1. Aaand finally here comes our favourite Christmas commercial music of this year: "Die Geschichte vom wahren Weihnachtsmann" (The story of real Santa Claus) from the German discounter netto.

The animated commercial film tells a story about how Santa became Santa. What we love about this commercial is that they used an original song. Other than the ad music we talked about before, this music was composed, played and recorded for this film only. And not only for that we fell in love with the song, but for its beautiful sound and an adorable child vocal. This song just steals your heart.

The campaign was made by one of the leading commercial agencies in Germany Jung von Matt and the music was made by 2wei Music. The ad has already remarkable 18 million views on Youtube. Check it out!
